THE UPSIDE DOWN SKYSCRAPER Architects have designed an incredible 65-storey 'earth scraper' that plunges 300 metres below ground. The stunning upside down pyramid in the middle of Mexico City has been designed as a concept to get around height limits on new buildings in the capital. The subterranean building has 10 storeys each for homes, shops and a museum, as well as 35 stories for offices. A glass floor covers the massive 240m x 240m hole in the city's main square to filter in natural light from the world above. The design has been crowned with a Mexican flag. 14th November

METROPOLIS Metropolis is a 1927 German expressionist epic science-fiction drama film directed by Fritz Lang. He and his wife, Thea von Harbou, wrote the silent film, which starred Gustav Fröhlich, Brigitte Helm, Alfred Abel and Rudolf Klein-Rogge. Erich Pommer produced it in the Babelsberg Studios for Universum Film A.G.. It is regarded as a pioneering work of the science-fiction genre in movies, being among the first feature-length movies of the genre. Made in Germany during the Weimar Period, Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia and follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city's ruler, and Maria, a poor worker, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes of their city. Filming took place in 1925 at a cost of approximately five million Reichsmarks. The art direction draws influence from Bauhaus, Cubist and Futurist design. 20th October 2016
THE UNDERWORLD I've always been interested in mythology, especially as a child. The Greek underworld, in mythology, is an otherworld where souls go after death, and is the original Greek idea of afterlife. At the moment of death the soul is separated from the corpse, taking on the shape of the former person, and is transported to the entrance of the Underworld. The Underworld itself is described as being either at the outer bounds of the ocean or beneath the depths or ends of the earth. It is considered the dark counterpart to the brightness of Mount Olympus, and is the kingdom of the dead that corresponds to the kingdom of the gods. Hades is a realm invisible to the living, made solely for the dead. 20th October
COMING UP WITH A TITLE I did more research/mind-mapping to build an argument of why to go underground, with the main points being space constraints , rising population moving into cities and it being potentially sustainable. But think I may be going off-track I want to involve underground already having a sense of dystopia but want to give a sense of utopia as a part of an argument and to link in nicely with the moontopia project? I've come up with a "question" to get my idea focused and I think it's too long "Due to rising population and space constraints in cities, expanding underground is the only effective way to increase living space. The success of this depends on changing people’s perceptions as the underground from history and media is already seen in a negative way. " 20th October 2016
LINKING DISSERTATION FROM FEASIBILITY As my main theme is going underground for protection, I need to think about how to write my dissertation to do with the underground? 7th October 2016
