EXPERIMENTS I would like to feature something on the wall to represent underground spaces. A while ago I created these cave paintings to feature in the tunnel. 22nd April 2017
FINAL WORK FOR PRESENTATION 24th April 2017
ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS For this room I had the idea to have a moving installation abouve on the roof to sybolise the growing sea level. This would move fluidly and ellgently. Even though I liked this I dea, I could see no reason for why to use it, It seemed to be randomly placed in this interior compared to everything else. Therefore I decided not to use it. 22nd April 2017
FUTURE VISION ROOM Here is an idea I had for the future vision room, with platforms to interact with the creen and a tree growing in the centre where natural light can shine through. However, I do not see a need for these platforms anymore if there are no crops to be picked. And I haven’t got any evidence to back up why a tree? So I would pick plant which can grow in this tunnel using the solar channelling method. 20th April 2017
COMBINING OTHER VISUALS This is a quickly created image to put into context the potential activities which may take place in this space. 17th April 2017

DEVELOPMENT OF SPACES I drew up these quick arrangement of spaces. To visualise more of how one can use a space. 1 - I had the idea to be literal with the London Underground Sewers and the great stink. Where I would create a river in the middle representing the river Thames. Information would be shown on the sides 2- again being literal with the London underground sewer system but creating tube tunnels for the public to walk in through the space. 3 - hanging wall information 4 - have a pathway in the middle, to represent like a river, but to have information on massive boards throughout the river journey. Now that I have created these ideas, I can now develop into a further concept and create some final interiors. 15th April 2017
LONDON UNDERGROUND AND LONDON UNDERGROUND SEWER SYSTEM I found these images extremely interesting and made me want to find out more of the history of London and its underground past. When I showed friends and family these photos they all thought the same. That is when I realised I want to use these images in my space as they are not well known and can catch attention 8th April 2017
DEVELOPMENT - HYDROPHONIC PLANTS I has the idea, to make the space more interactive for the user, and to highlight the future vision of underground spaces and development. I would of made it interactive by giving the user a token, with a specific colour. And the colour which their token was would have gone to a different section along the side of the tunnel, The colour matches with the light shining down on the section. The user would be free to pick the crops and interact with them. However I thought this could be a problem because hydrophonic plants require specialists to look after them. Also, I am growing them underground to be protected and preserve and there’s a risk that the general public could tamper with these plants. Therefore I would need these plants to be kept protected but still being able to be seen by the public. 4th April 2017
ISOMETRIC I created this quick render to understand how underground my tunnel is. I need to remember that it is underground and can incorporate the conditions underground spaces have. A possible skylight can be used at the beginning, but I don't know if I would want to use it as I want to keep the tunnel dark. 2nd April 2017
LONDON UNDERGROUND MAP I have always loved the graphics of the underground map. It was this which made it easier to understand for commuters to read. It will be interesting if I could incorporate this into my design as I can pay tribute to the London underground map. This one in particular because it improved how commuters understood it compared to the other map/ 30th March 2017
MIND WALL I consider myself to be a very visual learner. To make sure I am organised and up to date on my goals for the end of the week, I put everything up on my wall to remind myself of the key requirements. 26th March
PLAYING WITH 3DS MAX I was finding it hard looking at my technical drawings and visulising the depths an gradients of my Tunnel. Therefore I put my project into 3DS max, and created this above image. I also realised my space is a lot bigger than what I think it is. I'll need to make better planned use of space. 25th March 2016
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT The kingsway tram tunnel with a wall covered in a interactive wall. I made this perspective drawing to start visualising zones more in 3d. 12th March

Final Major Project

UNDERGROUND COMMUNITY Everywhere around the world the homeless community take refuge in underground spaces. The photos above show the underground homeless community in Las Vegas. Even though this shows the dark side of underground space, it still protects this homeless community as they have a better chance of survival in these spaces. This is what I am addressing in my project and thought that these images are though-provoking by showing another way of life in how the underground can assist. Showing how the underground can be utilised for a social problem instead of an environmental issue shows how diverse it is. 28th Mqrcjh 2017
FINAL PRESENTATION For my presentation I presented a 5 minute slide for why there needs to be better planned use of underground usage. The feedback from my presentation was positive. The general vibe was that I have good visual but need to cross reference my images better. For instance to show where they are on the floor plan to where they are in the perspective visual. I also need to make it clearer how people will enter the tunnel and what information they will be given before they go in 27th April 2017
FINAL HAND IN For my hand in I made sure I reflected from the feedback I was given after final presentation. I am happy with the outcome and hope that it influences the use for underground development and will be a stepping stone for underground spaces in London to be put to better use 7th May 2017

DEVELOPING I redrew the plans to make them as accurate as possible. I have also created my first visual illustrating how cave paintings can tell the story once you have entered the tunnel. As there is no exit at the end, people will come back through the entrance. 7th March 2017
THE THEATRE OF FISH A restaurant in Amsterdam had a unique selling point. Customers could view the fish, and be told where it came from, how it's going to be cooked. This shows how having a new and different concept for a restaurant could be applied to my project. Where people can interact with the food. 2nd February 2017
INFLUENCE FROM RENZO PIANO EXHIBITION I have taken inspiration from Renzo Piano exhibition to create a story hanging from the beams of my project. Above is an illustration which depicts a story. I thought about how people once used to live underground to protect themselves from the harsh weather. And now since the climate is changing is my be possible that we are going to live underground again. 9th March 2016
CASE STUDY - de Allegri & Fogale’s Mise-en-Abyme tunnel at the 2015 London Design Festival. I looked at this tunnel to admire the use of material that was used. And It mace me realise that I have been thinking too linear and box shaped with my project. 9th March 2016
CASE STUDY Renzo piano emilio vedova exhibition, To the rear of the building, perfectly lined up in a specially designed metal structure are Vedova’s works. Ten robotic shuttles move along a rail running between the trusses for almost the entire length of the building. These electronically controlled devices equipped with extending mobile arms and a winch retrieve the works from the archive, transport them to the exhibition space and place them in the intended position. This is ideal for my project as there are lots of beams. Even though I will not be moving mine electronically, I can still use it for people to interact with them and move them themselves. 8th March 2017
CASE STUDY I am thinking my project should be more like an educational tourist attraction, where it teaches people about the benefits of subterranean spaces. Since I know people don't know about the valuable benefits of underground spaces, I think I am heading in the right direction of conncecting people back to the underground. Conncectivity is key, and because there will be a function in my tunnel I have looked at Ponte Vecchio. A bridge in Italy which has shops accross it which sells gold. 6th March 2017
CASE STUDY The shape of my plans, a long tunnel, got me thinking about how to use this shape, and how the impact of this shape can have of what I’m trying to tell. An exhibtion in the Tate featured a giant steel structure with a dark chamber. Being 13 metres high and 20 meters long, people walk through where it gets darker and darker, creating a sense of unease. Underlying this chamber is a number of allusions to recent Polish history – the ramp at the entrance to the Ghetto in Warsaw, or the trucks which took Jews away to the camps of Treblinka or Auschwitz, for example. By entering the dark space, visitors place considerable trust in the organisation, something that could also be seen in relation to the recent risks often taken by immigrants travelling. Balka intends to provide an experience for visitors which is both personal and collective, creating a range of sensory and emotional experiences through sound, contrasting light and shade, individual experience and awareness of others, perhaps provoking feelings of apprehension, excitement or intrigue. 5th March 2017
IDEAS TO PUT IN TUNNEL To give the space narrative and to explore underground space. I can use cave paintings to tell a story of how the underground can respond to environmental issues. We once lived underground as cave men, and now that we have overdeveloped on the surface, and climate change making the surface inhabitable. we are eventually going to have to live back underground. 1st March
CASE STUDY Galmidi Yitzhar and the industrial designer Yaksein Eliran won first place in a design competition for a new underground train station in one of Israel’s. Getting inspiration from some of the city’s most well know features, such as its collection of Bauhaus architecture and the Ficus Microcarpa trees planted throughout in order to provide shade and shelter, the pair have designed a subterranean space that uses natural light. 28th February 2017
FINDING A NARRATIVE As I have information screens educating about the underground. I need to focus in what to teach. The idea is to create a narrative which promotes underground use and sells its importance. 27th February
DRAWING FLOOR PLANS After sending numerous amount of emails around London concil to get the plans for the Kingsway Tram Tunnel, I decided to draw them myself. I had plans of the tunnel but they were not clear enough and were too zoomed out to see the area I was focusing on. Therefore I would use an enginnering script I aqauired, photos of the Kingsway Tram Tunnel, and confirmation from a civil engineer who I had made contact with to make sure my plans were correct. 26th February 2017
CASE STUDY Pionen – Sweden Cave Office With using underground spaces you can play with levels a lot more. A lot of time and consideration has to go into the design and think dimensionally. 14h February 2017
CASE STUDY Pionen – Sweden Cave Office The project takes place in a former 1200 square meter anti-atomic shelter. An amazing location 30 meters down under the granite rocks of the Vita Berg Park in Stockholm. The client is an internet provider and the rock shelter hosts server halls and offices. The starting point of the project was to consider the rock as a living organism. The humans try to acclimate themselves to this foreign world and bring the ‘best' elements from earth: light, plants, water and technology. We created strong contrasts between rooms where the rock dominates and where the human being is a stranger against rooms where the human being took over totally. 14h February 2017
PRIMARY RESEARCH When I was creating my narrative, I wanted to know if people already knew all the information that i have known from feasibility, and investigative study about the importance of underground space. I made a questionnaire which 42 people answers, and here are the results. It's clear that people only know the basics about underground space. Also this questionnaire was useful as it made me realise that people will enter a space if they know its underground. 27th Febrary 2017
CONCEPT SKETCHES I want to create areas where people can see the food that is being grown and that can either be from a glass atrium that they can see through the floor. I also had the idea if there are two levels and the growing area is underneath then glass tube can shoot up the food to keep it away from being contaminated. 26th January 2017
THE ORIGINAL PLANS FOR KINGSWAY TRAM TUNNEL 26th February 2017
DEVELOPMENT FROM WORKSHOP From feedback I need to make my project more than plants and lights, therefore I need to come up with design concepts to give my project more density. From the workshop I created organic moulds which sparked the design for my new idea. Playing with levels, I thought this objects could act like platforms which allow people to go up and interact with the plants. 26th February 2017
WORKSHOP - KEY WORDS, INTERACTION UNDERGROUND , WORD LEVELS i used the same workshop from feasibility to get a word to sum up my project. I went with the word levels and created these quick plasticine moulds. From feedback I need to make my project more than plants and lights, therefore I need to come up with design concepts to give my project more density. 25th February 2017
WHAT ELSE IS UNDERGROUND? Along with other abandoned underground spaces, there are 40 abandoned underground stations in London, , I’m showing that there needs to be a better planned use of underground spaces, by reusing an exsisitng place and showing that the underground can offer to improve factors contributing to quality of life while being safe and engaging. 20th February 2017
Developed Idea I'm going underground for the purpose of having more of a controlled stable temperature, whatever is put into it is protected and it is more energy efficient. Therefore I will be incorporating underground farming into this tunnel to bring people into it to promote the use of underground space, as growing plant is possible underground, it shows how versatile it is and therefore can be used for more purposes. Here is a Photoshop render I did, it shows the impact an underground space can have. I created a simple design where tables can be fitted around columns. 19th February 2017
Interim Presentation - Positive feedback from presentation, but since my idea is there, I need to make this project more than just growing plants in a tunnel. I want to make this project an experience and from my 21st February 2017
CHOSEN AREA - Kingsway Trm tunnel - I decided to use the Kingsway tram tunnel in London, I thought this would be a great underground space to use, because once you enter the space, you can clearly see the exit, which people are aware of if they have a slight fear of underground spaces. the Kingsway tunnel system, which is used these days as a vehicle underpass, was constructed as a subway for a tram line. The idea was to ease traffic congestion around Aldwych. The northern section, which begins nears Holborn Underground Station is now disused and is the space I’ll be focusing on. I chose this space because people will be more willing to go here compared to a cave and more people pass this area being in Camden. 16th February 2017
COMING BACK INTO FOCUS Before I was going off on a tangent, and not focusing enough on underground spaces, but then discussing this project with fellow students. There seems to be confusion for why to do it in a cave and not an urban area. I understand that a cave, is the most natural, underground space you can get and if I was to use one I would use it like an experiment, highlighting the importance of underground spaces and promoting it. However, caves are usually away from people, and people who fear underground wouldn’t go there. Also looking at the Svarld seed vault, what I took from that was that it isnt accessible to the public. 15th February 2017
WHY GO UNDERGROUND? Underground Benefits - energy efficiency protection low impact design preservation isolation 15th February 2017
CASE STUDY Future Food District Exhibition by MIT & Carlo Ratti at Milan Expo 2015, Milan – Italy Working with supermarket chain COOP Italia, Ratti wanted to explore whether introducing digital information into food stores would affect the way that people interact with and select food. The result is the Future Food District – a pavilion that functions as a real supermarket where visitors can purchase items. The difference is that the 1,500 products on display are positioned beneath digital mirrors that present information about the origins, ingredients and manufacturing of the foods. 7th February 2017
TUTORIAL After thinking about research, will need to change location to be as underground as possible. Stepping away form urban farming and concentrating on the benefits of subterranean space. When discussing my project it seems to be more about the urban farming than the underground. So I need to evluate everything I have done think of a location and consider the use of subterranean space more. 14th February 2017
WHY NOT OTHER METHODS OF URBAN FARMING? The worlds population is growing rapidly, this is causing environmental issues such as food wastage, food miles and lack of space in Urban places. Going underground in an Urban country such as London can respond to these issues. The reason that it is underground is because flat roof farming isn’t an option for London, there’s already lack of space so underground can solve the issue, but it does have its benefits such as, no pesticides, well insulated environment means food is doesn’t spoil as quickly and food wastage is reduced. Food being grown in skyscrapers isn’t economically viable, but it can be underground. This will bring many benefits, such as food immediacy, people will get their food quickly reducing food miles in the process. Health benefits too, bringing more food into the city quickly, and another benefit is that it creates job opportunities. There will be a social inclusion within this area. 6th February 2017
TUTORIAL FEEDBACK Some main points that got picked up when I explained my new idea. 4th February 2017
CASE STUDY - Pasona Urban Farm by Kono Designs When I design, I want to have a meaning behind why. To have a reason behind a concept or project gives it extra depth because it is backed up by a problem and thus may solve. This supermarket’s interior design puts forward the idea of environmental protection through various aspects. The shelves and walls are decorated with compacted recycled cardboards and spare planks, while some small shelves are presented on old bicycles. The animal prints on the wall, also made from recycled cardboards, aim to raise awareness about endangered animals around the world. 24th Janurary 2017
CASE STUDY - Svaldard Seed Vault Gene banks around the world hold collections of food and crops. But factors such as, natural disasters, catastrophes or poor funding and management means that these banks are unprotected. A whole collection can be ruined by something small such as a bad functioning freezer. This is a big problem as the damage to crop variety is irreversible. It was the defenceless storage of the worlds gene banks which inspired the global seed vault. The purpose of the Vault is to hoard backups of seed samples from the world’s crop collections. Permafrost and thick rock ensure that the seed samples will remain frozen even without power. The Vault is the crucial protection for the world’s food supply, offering options for future generations to overcome the challenges of climate change and population growth. It will keep safe, for centuries, millions of seeds representing every important crop variety available in the world today. Savarld seed vault is a great example of how the underground can be used for an essential cause. It uses the constant temperature of underground conditions to store and preserve back up seed samples from world crops collections. The conditions are so constant it doesn’t even need any energy to preserve the crops. But this is not assessable for the public and is not well known. I would like to create a space, which improves peoples quality of life that they can easily visit and making the underground more accepting to public. I want my project to explore these areas of preservation and protection 30th January 2017
CASE STUDY - Pasona Urban Farm by Kono Designs An employment and staffing company, established the growing area to foster a work environment that "coexists with nature." Even though this case study isnt underground, it shows the importance of urban farming and how it can bring a communty together. I want my project to bring people together in an interactive activity. 24th Janurary 2017
THINKING MORE IN DETAIL This book called Ecowarrior was very helpful as it highlighted the benefits in a more thorough way. More farming in cities = less importing food around = less carbon foot print. Benefits, food immediacy, health benefits, create job opportunity, generate icome for urban poverty groups, social inclusion. Trying to think at a deeper level so my concept will be more developed. 24th January 2017
PUTTING INTO CONTEXT 17th January 2017
CASE STUDY - Growing Underground ,London Underground Farming Below Clapham High Street lies a 6,000 square feet World War bomb shelter, lies an urban farm which hits on the similar benefits in which I have been looking at in my feasibility and dissertation. Being underground means that this underground farm is protected from the unpredictable weather, furthermore, being underground also is protected from trespassers a key benefit for farmers.. I touched on underground farming in my dissertation and this case study highlights the potential underground urban farming has now. For example, food miles is reduced because food is available to grow nearer to people who live in cities. This responds to environmental issues of food milles as carbon footprint for transporting produce would be reduced. As there is a lack of agricultural space in London, going underground for farming is the way to utilise subterranean space. 14th January 2017
First Initial Idea to be presented – CREATING AN EXPERIENCE TO HIGHLIGHT IMPORTANCE OF UNDERGROUND SPACE I want to design an interior which highlights the importance of subterranean space by showing the benefits of underground farming as I think this will be a better way to link to feasibility with more backed up research. I want to make this space engaging and safe so there are no negatives views. Underground farming responds to environmental issue of food, waste and space because as the temperature remains constant underground, food can be stored and grown. Food preservation is increased meaning that it doesn't spoil as quickly as it would on the surface. I want to show people that underground spaces are important as they protect and preserve. I want to create an experience for people who use the space. I want to create a space where people can look at the growing crops, and maybe have a chance to interact with it too. 16th Janurary 2017
Research - Key Points I have read a lot of articles on urban farming, but here are the key point linking back to why it would be more beneficial underground. - It reuses an existing place - Addresses the issues of over population - Advantages for urban cities where there is lack of space to grow crops - It is the future of farming - Constant conditions of underground means exotic food can be grown and doesn’t spoil as quickly - Produces crops all year round - Underground provides much needed insulation to help crops grow - How London’s new underground farms will revolutionise the way we source our food, main points. Sustainable farming business, produce crops with the least amount of energy expenditure possible. Produce crops all year round, throughout the seasons. Using a pre existing place, underground provides much needed insulation to help crops grow 21st January 2017
What? The world’s population is growing rapidly, and more people live in cities than ever. This is causing environmental issues with food wastage, food miles and lack of available space especially in urban areas. Already there is a food shortage in vegetables and I think that what I want to do (Underground farming) can solve problems relating to these issues. (talk about the issues going on relating to climate change and how it all links) How? I want to show why London is in need of underground space for urban agriculture by creating a place which connects the locals to their food. People are interested in where their food comes from, this place will provide the opportunity to personally see the food being grown. Also not only can people buy produce like a supermarket, there will be a little café area where food can be cooked choices by the customer. This will be aimed for foodies, vegans as it’s a new fad to eat well and not eat meat. Why? The fact food can be grown closer can bring in so many opportunities to the locals and bring in benefits and creates jobs. Food immediacy can bring in health benefits, as fresher produce can be grown. Underground farming already exists but no one knows about it or can see where the food comes from. And no one knows the positive effect urban agriculture can have. The underground is a controlled environment combined with being grown locally means food miles and food wastage is reduced People also don’t know the benefits it can bring while staying carbon neutral. That is why I want to create a space that brings back food to where we live, and re-engaging city dwellers while reusing an existing space. 26th January 2017
Location options 1) Kingsways Tram Tunnel 2) 61 Southwark Street I'll have to pick what location I want to have my project, which is proving difficult. The basment for 61 Southwark Street wont have enough impact as it it not truly underground. The kingsway Tram tunnel is an interesting choice but I will have to back up why I should pick that. 6th February 2017
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT As I am a visual learner, the way to improve my work is by create perspective visuals so I can image the possibilities of what can go in the space. So far I have thought of four stages of my project. 10th March 2016
NEW AIMS . To promote the use of underground development to show how people can have a better quality of life from the past present and future. -To teach people the importance of underground space by creating an experience in an existing subterranean setting - Identify urban problems and environmental concerns that have been solved, or could be responded to, by the use of underground space 16th February 2017
Moving to FMP – Reflection on how to move on FMP Now that I have finished the Moontopia brief I can reflect on my feedback which identified that I didn’t look into enough precedent studies. This consequently meant that I could have determined a further concept. My principles from the feasibility brief consisted of, using existing underground caves on the moon (Luna Lava Tubes) for protection and using the conditions of underground space to enable my rainforest to grow which responded to the environmental issue of deforestation. Therefore using my key principles from the feasibility project and using fundamental parts from the investigative study means I can develop a concept with more depth. Using more precedents and research will improve my idea. 13th January 2017
Because I know from feasibility and investigate study that subterranean spaces are renowned for protecting as it can shelter people from natural disasters, unbearable climate or hostile conditions outside. The underground can also respond to environmental issues. An extreme idea I showed by putting a rainforest underground on the moon in response to deforestation. However, the underground can respond to other current environmental issues such as overpopulation, pollution, climate change, which I found out when writing my dissertation. 14th January 2017
