Final Major Project

In general there needs to be better planned uses of underground space to raise awareness of what benefits they can bring. With more environmental issues becoming a problem in a near future, I looked at how the underground can respond to these concerns to help people have a better quality of life. The underground is more known for protection or for placing the unwanted facilities e.g. car parks. I showed that the underground can be more than just being used for unwanted storage. I highlighted the importance of underground spaces by creating an educational attraction in the subterranean space, Kingsway Tram Tunnel, London.

Context of Underground

This gives a context of the underground and shows examples of subterranean uses all over the world. The locations and examples of these spaces are Australia, Las Vegas, Norway and Poland. As some of these spaces do not allow visitors and are not easily accessible to visit from London, I wanted to show the thought-provoking imagery of how diverse the underground is. The imagery and information will be shown on large information boards which will be fixed to the beams. This allows them to move up and down the beams and be spun around. Letting the public interact with these boards. In this area I am focusing in from examples of subterranean use around the world, and focusing in on London and its culture from the past. I will narrate the story of “the great stink” when people used to dump their waste in the river Thames. This was an event in 1858 in London which caused the plans to create a sewer system due to a cholera epidemic and poor quality of living. It was Basgette who designed a four sewer system that incredibly improved peoples quality of life and his design is still being used today (BBC, 2017). I will also show how the London Underground came about to clear up congestion on the surface as the growing population of London means that there were commuting problems with carts and cabs. And finally I will explain how the underground acted as the greatest from of protection for people during World War II and saved many lives. I wanted to focus in on London where the people are at that time and teach them the use of underground development in the past and how it helped and why it still need to be valued.

Subterranean London

Environmental Concerns

In this area is a wake up call to raise the awareness of global issues which will be getting worse in time to come. The underground can respond to these issues I will be addressing Overpopulation, Climate change and Pollution I want this section to give background story of how in the not so distant future, human will need to survive. And going underground, for any of the reasons I have mentioned before. Will assist human survival. A problem of underground development is the lack of acceptance subterranean spaces have due to negative perceptions. As I cant change peoples perceptions, I can try and make them more accepting by teaching underground benefits and the dangers to come to the surface abov
This section shows the potential underground space has, and how we should be using it in the future. As natural light can be channelled underground the interior doesn’t need to be as gloomy. Seating is available in this area as well as there being paths which a designed using inspiration from the London Underground map as a Wayfinding device. Plants will feature on the wall being grown by hydrophincs

Future Vision

Future Concerns

This shows the benefits of underground farming and the benefits involved because using subterranean space means that agricultural land can be created, where it lacks already in London. Also the use of underground space can respond to environmental issues population growth, food waste and food miles because the underground is a more controlled environment and food preservation lasts longer meaning less food is wasted, also food miles is reduced because there’s no need to transport due to the food immediacy, having less of an impact on the environment. As it takes some time for crops to fully grow, the ones which are ready will be sold at the kiosk. The hrydophonic case will always be growing plants and will work as a simple system of selling, plants ready will be packaged and go on sale. And when they have ran out they are gone. There is an area at the end of te tunnel for the stafff and equipment needed for the hyrdophonic case. Information will be displayed about the benefits of urban farming. The information will also be on the packaging.
