FINAL DESIGN I chose this design because it has meaning as I used my aims preservation, protection and research to find the collective word “layers” which then led to my design. It is spatially more efficient and it thinks about what is going on in each space to a greater extent to the other designs because there are designated areas for a different tasks. I think it fits in more with the underground as the shapes fit into the contours, and the tiers are a tunnel like structure which are used in undergrounds currently on earth and from research tunnels are a better shape to use for the underground, thinking about the lava tubes and the London underground. This design is the most persuasive in terms of why I want to send a rainforest on the moon. This is the most realistic and considers more from research the conditions of the moon. I also think this shape looks like it will serve the most protection out of all the designs. Being underground and having the extra shelter meant that my aim is being filled out to the fullest.
FINAL MODEL PROTOTYPE Experimenting with plasticine before I make my model out of clay. 21st November 2016
Here is a better 3D representative of my design where you can see the extra bit of “layered” “protection” which goes across the tiers more clearly. Underneath this overlap is where the artificial light will shine on the rainforest since the moon has 14 days of light 14 days of darkness. Also this layer is where will be sprinklers and water access to water the rainforest will be. I created this collage so that the contours of the underground are more visible. Also it shows more of a perceptive where the design will sit underground in the moon, and how it will work. To accommodate the verity of plants that grow in the rainforest, along with light and water access will also be other plants which require structure to grow in the way. 19th November 2016
NEW WORD LAYERS Seeing the word “layers” reoccurring means that my design should reflect this. The word layers suits my project in many ways and goes with the aims as well. When thinking about the rainforest, there are different layers, as the animals live on the different layers and plants grow too. Also with protection I think of the word layers, as with lots of layers its easier to stay safe. Layers go with the science part as when mind-mapping, thinking about plant cells, in order for them to stay safe and rigid, there is a layer of cell membrane forming around the cell. In conclusion the word layer is important and can think of a design which suits the project and going underground more. 11th November 2016
PAINTINGS FOR STORY BOARD 18th November 2016
ZONING IDEAS I started to think about the beginning part of this concept like a story. A massive rainforest isn’t just going to come together on the moon, on the first day of arrival so therefore I wanted to visualise what it may be like for when people first get to the moon. WILL PLANTS/TREES BE TRANSPORTED? Imagining when they first get to the moon that it would start of with little greenhouses, but multiple of them. 17th November 2016

SKETCH DEVELOPMENT I created some more shapes referring back to the mind map. Since the word “layer” was repeating itself, I thought my design could be around this word as it fits in with most of the aims. Using different media, I redid the workshop using this word, and came up with a load of different models. Sketches are starting to develop but the underground still needs to be considered. Some more development into these layered ideas needs to occur but in mind of the underground. 14th November 2016

Living. Working. Researching. These are the fundamental values that we have based our concept on, bringing the community of the lunar colony together through various purposes. Combining each of our ideas, we have formed a succinct and cohesive concept, enabling the lunar colony to thrive on the Moon and create a place where the future of the human civilisation can exist. The concept is formed of three main elements: public engagement, protection and purpose. Each of these is represented in an individual area of the design. 11th November 2016
PERSPECTIVES INSIDE DESIGN 2 10th November 2016
WHAT NEEDS PROTECTING? - CASE STUDY I know because of the research I have carried out that the best way for what I am desiging to survive is by going underground, But what need protecting? With so many global issues that affect the world today it's hard to focus in on a subject. However when I was brainstorming, what I thought needed protecting the most and what is causing other problems is deforestation. 10th November 2016
DESIGN 2 - I drew this design so I could understand ratios more the size of this project and know where to put everything. Doing this meant that I am thinking more of what’s going on around the space and could see that this may not be the right design to use. There isn’t any dedicated spaces and space for the rainforest to expand outwards. I also didn’t think about where the colony are going to live, this is simply just the research space and rainforest space, there is no living space for my colony which is what I need to consider if I am answering this brief. 9th November 2016
DESIGN 1 - This design I made basic so I knew more details for what to put in different zones. I know I want my zones to be research, growing. This design wasn't very interesting and lacked the. I have been focusing too much about the structure and exterior of my design instead of my interior. There for I started thinking about what to put in my design by focusing on the interior. I kept it simple and used a square shape for the exterior. This is my first design I drew, I didn’t use it because, I felt like it was too simple, and too much like a green house. Also there was no meaning for why I created the shapes and seemed like I designed then had nothing to back up for why I did it and didn’t belong to this project. 9th November 2016
QUICK CONCEPT SKETCHES 8th November 2016
QUICK COMPUTER VISUALS I wanted to create quick visuals to determine the potentials this project can have. Now that I know luna lava tubes are an optimum size to design in, I can start putting together this project. 5rh November 2016
HOW BIG ARE LUNA LAVA TUBES? If these natural tunnels are small, then I would have to dig on the Moon damaging the surface which is what I don't want to do. Consequently these caves are massive meaning that what I can design has bigger limits. 5th November 2016

RENDERS FROM WORKSHOP I've taken the models I made from the workshop to create some visuals. It’s always good to add people into any rough designs. Putting it into context brings it to life. But this has only considered the exterior, where the interior should be explored more. 28th October 2016
MOONTOPIA Starting Moontopia Brief, the group tutorials are useful to bounce ideas off each other. What came up most was the "WHY". We will need to have a why for what we are doing, because anything can be put on the moon. But we now have the chance to use the moon as a metaphor and solve a problem by thinking conceptually. 15th October
RESEARCH - There is a lot of information about the moon. I find it fascinating that the moon landing was nearly over 50 years ago. We have advanced so much in technology since then. With more research I can start to create a concept which has more depth to it. 16th October 2016
BRAINSTORMING Stimulating conversations occur during tutorials where we all talk about current issues which meant I can come up with a few ideas for this project while thinking conceptually. Because this project is on the moon, conditions there are different to Earth. For example I was thinking of creating a health facility because gravity is less on the Moon making it easier on joints. 16th October 2016

RESEARCH When researching about the Moon and how it will be possible to stay there in the future. What kept coming up was that humans would have to go underground. Therefore, something to consider when doing this project is if I should base my lunar colony underground. They wouldn't have to dig as existing spaces could provide shelter. 17th October 2016
RESEARCH - Grounded research means that when designing you can solve problems which would occur along the way. I wanted this base research to keep in mind the possible limits to which Moontopia may have. Also to keep this in mind when designing conceptually, the possibilities are endless so research helps me not design anything for the sake of it. 16th October 2016
Main Focus - Protection noun the action of protecting, or the state of being protected.“the B vitamins give protection against infection"synonyms:defence, shielding, shelter, preservation, conservation, safe keeping, safeguarding, safety, security, sanctuary, refuge, lee, immunity, insurance, indemnity. For this workshop, we summarised our project into one verb. As I knew I wanted my project underground, my main aim is protection. From this verb I quickly made these paper models. It’s challenging enough to get across the aim of a project into design. So focusing on what you are going to do into one verb really helps when creating quick model sketches. It helps create different designs so that you aren’t copying someone else’s 24th October 2016
CASE STUDY - LOW LINE NEW YORK The Lowline is a plan to use innovative solar technology to illuminate an historic trolley terminal on the Lower East Side of New York City. It uses an existing space and shows me how I could incorporate this technology to channel natural sunlight into my design. Therefore artificial light is not as needed. 27th October 2016

FINAL PRESENTATION After my final presentation it became clear that the stronger pieces of work were the models and collages, the computer models can look flat, so in order to create better visualise I need to create some more models out of drying clay. 20th November 2016
